Knowing when to service your car is one of the simplest ways to help keep it reliable, safe and running properly. Regular servicing can identify developing problems before they become more expensive repairs, while also helping your vehicle maintain the performance expected by its manufacturer.

For drivers in Mittagong and the surrounding Southern Highlands, Southern Highlands Service Centreprovides professional servicing for a wide range of makes and models.

As a general guide, most vehicles should be serviced according to the interval specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Depending on the make, model, engine and age of the vehicle, this may be based on a particular number of kilometres, a period of time, or whichever occurs first.

Some vehicles have relatively short service intervals, while others may have longer intervals between scheduled services. Your vehicle's owner's manual or manufacturer service schedule is therefore the best place to start.

If you're unsure when your next service is due, Southern Highlands Service Centrecan help you determine the appropriate servicing interval for your vehicle.

A vehicle is made up of hundreds of components that work together every time you drive. Regular servicing provides an opportunity to check important mechanical, electrical and safety systems and identify problems that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Depending on the vehicle and its scheduled maintenance requirements, servicing may involve checking or replacing items such as engine oil, filters, belts, fluids, brakes, tyres and other components.

Help protect the long-term value of the vehicle

Servicing is also an opportunity to discuss any changes you've noticed while driving, such as unusual noises, warning lights, changes in fuel consumption, vibration or difficulty starting.

A log book service is a scheduled service carried out in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's recommended maintenance requirements.

The service requirements can vary considerably between vehicles. A log book service may include specific inspections, adjustments, fluid checks, replacements and other maintenance tasks at particular kilometre or time intervals.

Keeping up with the recommended servicing schedule can be particularly important for newer vehicles.

At Southern Highlands Service Centre, our team can carry out log book servicing across a wide range of makes and models while following the applicable manufacturer service requirements.

Not necessarily, but an older vehicle may require closer attention to components that naturally wear over time.

Do older cars need more frequent servicing?

Age, kilometres travelled, driving conditions and how a vehicle has been maintained can all influence its condition.

A vehicle that is driven regularly and serviced correctly may continue to provide reliable transport for many years. Conversely, delaying routine maintenance can allow relatively minor problems to develop into more significant repairs.

For an older vehicle, regular inspections can be particularly useful because they provide an opportunity to identify wear before it affects reliability or safety.

Low kilometres do not necessarily mean a vehicle can go indefinitely without servicing.

Some maintenance requirements are time-based rather than purely distance-based. Fluids, seals, batteries, tyres and other components can be affected by age and operating conditions even when a vehicle is driven infrequently.

If your vehicle spends long periods parked, it's worth checking the manufacturer's recommended time-based service interval.

Frequent short journeys can place different demands on a vehicle compared with longer drives.

Depending on the vehicle, repeated short trips may affect engine operating temperatures, battery charging and other systems. Some modern vehicles also use sophisticated emissions and engine-management systems that can be affected by driving patterns.

Tell your mechanic how you normally use your vehicle. Your typical driving conditions can be useful when discussing maintenance requirements.

Your car's air conditioning system is another part of the vehicle that benefits from appropriate maintenance.

Don't forget your car's air conditioning system

If the air conditioner is taking longer to cool the cabin, producing unusual smells or noises, or simply isn't performing as it once did, it may need attention.

Air conditioning maintenance is not necessarily performed at the same interval as a standard vehicle service. For more information, read our guide: How Often Should You Service Your Car Air Conditioner?

It explains what can affect automotive air conditioning performance and when it may be appropriate to have the system checked.

You shouldn't necessarily wait for the next scheduled service if your vehicle starts behaving differently.

What are the signs my car needs attention?

Arrange an inspection if you notice symptoms such as:

Warning lights appearing on the dashboard

Air conditioning that is no longer cooling effectively

A small change in the way your vehicle drives can sometimes be an early indication that something needs attention.

There is no single servicing interval that applies to every vehicle. The right schedule depends on the manufacturer's recommendations as well as the vehicle's age, kilometres, condition and how it is driven.

Regular maintenance gives you and your mechanic the opportunity to monitor the condition of the vehicle and address problems before they become more serious.

The most important thing is to avoid treating servicing as something that only needs to happen when a problem appears.

If your vehicle is due for its next service, Southern Highlands Service Centrecan help with scheduled servicing and maintenance for a wide range of vehicles.

Prepare Your Car for the Summer Getaway Season

Spring has arrived in Mittagong, and with it comes warmer mornings, longer days and the anticipation of the summer holiday season fast on the horizon. If there’s one time to get your car into shape, it’s now. At Southern Highlands Service Centre, we believe a well-timed spring service not only helps your vehicle run smoothly through warmer months, but also gives you peace of mind for all your upcoming Christmas holiday travel.

Why Your Car Needs an AC & Cooling Tune-up Before Christmas

As temperatures rise, your car’s systems start working harder. The engine cooling system, air conditioning unit, interior ventilation and filters all become more critical to performance, comfort and safety. Spring is ideal as it precedes the heaviest heat load, and workshop schedules are usually more forgiving before the Christmas rush. In fact, many service centres see a surge in bookings as December draws near — so getting in early is wise to beat the seasonal bottleneck.

Why spring is a smart time to service your car

One of the biggest complaints during summer is a weak or failed aircon — a comfort issue, yes, but also a safety one (overheating of occupants, driver fatigue). In a spring AC service, we:

Test refrigerant pressure, look for signs of leaks in hoses or fittings

Check compressor performance, belt condition, and condenser integrity

Evaluate airflow, blower motor, vents and drain lines

Disinfect or deodorise the system if there’s any mould or odour present

Recharge the refrigerant to manufacturer specification (if required, and legally compliant under ARCTick)

Because Southern Highlands Service Centre (AU42890) is ARCTick-authorised, we adhere to strict standards for handling refrigerant and ensuring compliance.

While often overlooked, the cabin (or pollen) filter plays a key role in keeping the air you breathe inside the car healthy and pleasant. Over time, it accumulates dust, pollen, fine particles and even odours. A clogged filter:

Focus 2: Cabin Filters & Indoor Air Quality

Can allow fine particles into the cabin, affecting respiratory health

During a spring service, we inspect the cabin filter and replace it if needed, restoring airflow and ensuring clean cabin air — especially useful if you or passengers have allergies or asthma.

Your engine’s cooling system needs to be in top shape to handle hot weather and long drives. In a spring check we:

Focus 3: Cooling System, Radiators & Engine Heat Management

Flush or top up coolant (antifreeze mixture) if needed

Pressure test the radiator, hoses, clamps and water pump

Inspect thermostat function and radiator fan operation

Check for corrosion, blockages or scale inside the cooling passages

Confirm the overflow reservoir, temperature sensor, and coolant level are all functioning properly

This not only helps prevent overheating but protects components like the head gasket, thermostat and engine internals.

While AC, cabin filter and cooling are focal, a robust spring service will also cover:

Brake system inspection (pads, discs, fluid)

Tyres: tread depth, pressure, alignment and balancing

Belts and hoses beyond the cooling system

Lights, indicators and electrical systems

Steering, suspension and underbody inspection

These components all benefit from being addressed before summer journeys begin, and together they reduce the risk of breakdowns when you’re away from home.

As we approach the Christmas season, roads become busier, and many drivers will embark on road trips, school holiday travel or festive visits. A vehicle that’s already been serviced through spring is much less likely to suffer heat-related faults, aircon breakdowns or cooling system failures when you need it most.

Planning ahead: holiday driving & Christmas demand

Because many workshops get booked out in November and December, starting your maintenance in early spring means you avoid the rush, get more flexibility in timing, and give yourself peace of mind heading into the busiest time of year. In short: beat the Christmas crush by being proactive now.

Don’t leave your car’s comfort and reliability to chance. A spring service with a strong focus on air conditioning, cabin filters and cooling systems is one of the best investments you can make ahead of summer and holiday driving. Reach out to Southern Highlands Service Centre today to schedule your car’s spring check, before appointment slots start filling up.

After all, when December rolls in, many workshops are already booked — let’s get ahead of the curve…

Spring Car Service in Mittagong — Stay Cool & Holiday Ready

If your vehicle is over five years old and due for registration renewal in New South Wales, you'll likely need a Pink Slip, officially known as an e-Safety Inspection Report. At Southern Highlands Service Centre in Mittagong, we provide quick, reliable, and fully authorised Pink Slip inspections to help keep your vehicle legal and roadworthy on NSW roads.

Expert Pink Slip Inspections in Mittagong

Our team of licensed examiners understands the importance of a hassle-free safety check. We carry out thorough assessments to make sure your car meets all safety standards required under Transport for NSW regulations — and get your report lodged electronically on the same day.

A Pink Slip is a safety inspection report required for light vehicles more than five years old when you’re renewing registration in NSW. It's a standard check-up to ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy and safe to drive. Once completed, the report is sent directly to Service NSW’s database so you can renew your rego online or in person. Pink Slips apply to:

For heavy vehicles, trailers over 4.5 tonnes, or unregistered vehicles requiring registration from scratch, a Blue Slip (AUVIS inspection) is required instead.

At Southern Highlands Service Centre, we carry out a detailed check of key safety systems to ensure your vehicle is in top working order. The inspection typically includes:

What’s Checked During a Pink Slip Inspection?

Brakes: disc, pads, and overall stopping performance

Steering system: free play, leaks, joints

Lights: headlights, tail lights, indicators

Seat belts: condition and retract function

If everything passes, your e-Safety Check is submitted electronically — ready for your registration renewal. If any issues are found, you'll receive a report outlining the repairs needed to pass.

Your e-Safety Inspection Report is valid for 42 days from the date it’s issued. If you don’t renew your registration in that window, you’ll need to have the vehicle re-inspected.

At Southern Highlands Service Centre in Mittagong, we always recommend booking your inspection early so you have time to make any necessary repairs — and avoid a last-minute rush.

It's easy to get confused between the two. A Pink Slip is for registration renewal of a currently registered vehicle that’s more than five years old. A Blue Slip, on the other hand, is required for vehicles that are unregistered or have been brought in from interstate. A Blue Slip involves a more comprehensive inspection and identity verification.

Pink Slip vs Blue Slip: What’s the Difference?

If you’re unsure which inspection you need, our team at Southern Highlands Service Centre is always happy to help you clarify the requirements based on your situation.

Choosing a reputable inspection station is crucial. At Southern Highlands Service Centre, we pride ourselves on being part of the local community in Mittagong, offering expert knowledge, friendly service, and honest assessments. Our workshop is fully licensed and authorised to carry out e-Safety Inspections, and we ensure that each inspection is carried out thoroughly and fairly — without upselling or unnecessary delays.

Why Locals in Mittagong Trust Us for Pink Slips

Whether you're getting ready for rego renewal or simply want peace of mind about your vehicle’s condition, our experienced team makes the process smooth and straightforward. We also offer repairs on-site if any issues arise during your inspection.

If your vehicle fails the Pink Slip inspection, you’ll receive a Repair Needed Report, listing the faults that must be fixed to pass. You then have 14 days to complete the repairs and return for a free re-inspection.

What Happens If My Car Fails the Inspection?

Our team can assist with most repairs in-house, from brakes and suspension to tyres and windscreen wipers. We aim to get you back on the road — and registered — as quickly as possible.

Booking your Pink Slip with Southern Highlands Service Centre is easy. We accept bookings over the phone or online, and we aim to complete most e-Safety inspections within the same day. You’ll leave knowing your vehicle has been professionally assessed and is safe to drive — or you’ll know exactly what needs fixing, with no guesswork.

Preparing for Easter Driving in Mittagong: Essential Car Servicing Tips

As Mittagong enters the wettest (June) and coldest (July) months of the year the importance of ensuring your vehicle is ready for the winter conditions becomes paramount.

As the crisp air of autumn gives way to the chill of winter in Mittagong, it's crucial to ensure your car is prepared for the wetter and colder months ahead. Regular servicing plays a vital role in maintaining your vehicle's performance, safety, and reliability, especially when winter driving conditions can be more demanding

Here's a few more reasons regular service is essential and how it helps keep your car in top shape for winter driving in the greater Sydney area and NSW.

Regular car servicing is not just about keeping your vehicle running smoothly; it's about safety, reliability, and peace of mind. During winter, the mechanical demands on your car increase due to colder temperatures, wet conditions, and potentially hazardous roads. Ensuring your car is in optimal condition can prevent breakdowns, accidents, and costly repairs down the line.

Regular servicing allows the identification minor issues before they become significant problems and is a proactive approach which may save you from costly repairs and inconvenient breakdowns, especially when the weather conditions are less forgiving. Some of the areas that should be given particular attention in winter include;

Essential Winter-Readiness Checks During Regular Servicing

Winter mornings can be particularly harsh on car batteries. Cold weather reduces the battery's efficiency, making it harder to start your car. During a regular service, mechanics check the battery's charge and condition to ensure it's up to the task. A well-maintained battery means your car will start reliably even on the coldest mornings, helping you avoid inconvenient and potentially dangerous situations.

Fluids are the lifeblood of your vehicle, and maintaining their levels is critical during winter. Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid all play vital roles in your car's performance and safety. For instance, coolant (antifreeze) prevents the engine from freezing in low temperatures, while windshield washer fluid ensures visibility by keeping the windshield clear of ice and grime. Regular service ensures all these fluids are topped up and at the correct concentration, safeguarding your car against the elements.

Brakes are your primary safety mechanism, and their importance cannot be overstated, especially in winter when roads can be wet and slippery. Regular servicing includes checking the brake pads, rotors, and fluid to ensure the system is functioning optimally. Properly maintained brakes reduce stopping distances and improve overall vehicle control, crucial for avoiding accidents in winter conditions.

Good visibility is essential for safe driving, and functioning windshield wipers are a key component. Winter weather can bring rain, frost, and even sleet, all of which can impair your view. During a regular service, mechanics inspect the wipers for wear and tear and replace them if necessary. Ensuring your wipers are in good condition helps maintain clear visibility, reducing the risk of accidents. Regular service also helps ensure all exterior lights are working correctly, as overall visibility can be significantly reduced during winter.

Your tyres are the only point of contact between your car and the road, making their condition critical for safe winter driving. Regular servicing includes checking the tyre tread, pressure, and overall condition. Adequate tread depth is essential for good traction on wet and slippery roads, while correct tyre pressure ensures optimal performance and handling. Well-maintained tyres help prevent skidding and improve braking efficiency, enhancing your car's safety during winter.

A well-functioning HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system is not just about comfort; it's also about safety. The heating component ensures a warm interior, which helps keep the driver alert and comfortable. More importantly, the defrosting function clears the windshield and windows of frost and condensation, ensuring clear visibility. Regular service checks the HVAC system to ensure it's operating efficiently, providing you with both comfort and safety during winter drives.

Regular servicing is an essential aspect of vehicle maintenance, especially when preparing for winter driving in Mittagong. From ensuring your battery is in good condition to checking fluid levels, brakes, windshield wipers, tyres, and the HVAC system, these checks help keep your car safe and reliable.

So, as winter approaches, make sure to schedule a service with your trusted mechanic at Southern Highlands Service Centre in Mittagong to ensure your car is ready to tackle the colder months with confidence...
