Preparing for Easter Driving in Mittagong: Essential Car Servicing Tips

Generally speaking, if your vehicle is five years or older your registration renewal notice may warn you that you are due for an eSafety Check (Pink Slip Inspection). Only RMS accredited mechanics are allowed to undertake vehicle safety and registration inspections.

A Vehicle Safety certificate was previously known as a pink slip due to the colour of the paper they were printed on - but since July 2008 drivers in New South Wales can get E-safety checks. This means an Authorised Inspection Station is able to submit the vehicles ‘roadworthiness' certificate electronically straight to the transport authority, which saves you time because you no longer have to physically go to the RMS office to submit your certificate.

How do i know if i need a e-safety check?

You are notified if your vehicle requires a safety check on your registration renewal notice. A safety check is required in NSW if the vehicle is more than five years old or if it was previously registered in another state or territory. There are different types of inspections according to vehicle weights or if it is powered by LPG.

If a safety check is required and your vehicle runs on LPG, it must be inspected at an Authorised Safety Inspection Station (AIS) which has an authorised LPG examiner; many people still refer to this as an “LPG pink slip”

Southern Highlands Service Centre is an authorised safety check station for all light vehicle inspections, LPG and CNG inspections

(Note: Commercial vehicles with power-operated brakes and Trailers/caravans with breakaway brakes must be inspected at an HVAIS. Your certificate of registration will state whether the vehicle requires a HVAIS or Heavy Vehicle Inspection Scheme (HVIS) inspection. 

If your vehicle happens to fail a Pink Slip / eSafetyCheck Inspection, Southern Highlands Service Centre will prepare a 'repairs needed report'. You can then request Southern Highlands Service Centre undertake the required repairs (or take it to a mechanic of your choosing to have them carried out), but they must be undertaken within 14 days, before the report expires otherwise a new one needs to be undertaken.

 If you return the vehicle to Southern Highlands Service Centre within 14 days for the 2nd eSafety Check, no additional fees will apply to have it rechecked. You are of course free to take the vehicle to any eSafety Check station, but this will result in you being charged another eSafety Check fee by the mechanic conducting the vehicle inspection.
